Program for Emerging Middle Leaders

Stepping into Middle Leadership

Make the transition from expert practitioner to effective leader.

A practical leadership development programme for educators making the transition into middle leadership. Build the clarity, judgement, communication and confidence to lead colleagues well, without relying on authority alone.

A practical foundation for leading others

Many new leaders bring deep expertise in teaching and learning. The transition into leadership involves a different set of capabilities: establishing clarity, exercising professional judgement, setting boundaries and having effective conversations with colleagues. This programme supports participants to develop those capabilities through reflection, dialogue, case studies and practical application.

Rather than relying on leadership theory alone, participants work with practical approaches they can apply immediately within their own roles and teams.

Five capabilities for the transition

The curriculum is organised around five interconnected leadership capabilities. Participants explore each one in relation to their role, their colleagues and the context of their school.

Build your leadership identity

Explore the transition into leadership, credibility, leading peers, confidence and professional judgement.

Create clarity in your team

Establish team norms and expectations that support accountability, psychological safety and meaningful participation.

Have more effective leadership conversations

Develop communication, feedback, curiosity and composure. Explore conflict and earlier intervention.

Lead with boundaries

Clarify roles, ownership and responsibility; consider delegation and how to avoid unnecessary over-functioning.

Build sustainable leadership habits

Work with prioritisation, meetings, routines, consistency and implementation to support long-term effectiveness.

What participants will work towards

Across the programme, participants develop the ability to:

Lead with greater confidence and professional judgement.

Establish clear expectations and behavioural norms within teams.

Distinguish leadership responsibility from unnecessary over-functioning.

Hold earlier, more effective leadership conversations.

Create practical routines that reduce ambiguity and increase accountability.

Build sustainable leadership habits that support long-term effectiveness.

Learning that respects experience and supports application

The programme follows five learning principles. These shape how participants engage with challenge, one another and the practical work of leadership.

Dignity first

Participants learn best when they feel psychologically safe, respected and able to contribute without performative participation or public embarrassment.

Dialogue over performance

Purposeful conversation, structured collaboration and thoughtful reflection take the place of passive presentation.

Implementation matters

Professional learning should extend beyond the workshop through practical application, reflection and ongoing leadership practice.

Recognition before challenge

Learning begins by recognising participants’ existing expertise before introducing new perspectives and challenges.

Practical over inspirational

Participants should repeatedly leave sessions thinking: “I can use this tomorrow.”

Choose a format that fits your context

Delivery is flexible and contextualised to reflect your school’s priorities, leadership structures and strategic goals.
