What We Missed when PD Went Virtual

Like many schools around the world, as my school dealt with the new circumstances of the pandemic in the Spring of 2020, we eventually travelled the entire route of grief. The journey described here is how a carefully planned school year was thrown into turmoil, and how we came out the other end of this journey more resilient and capacity built to reimagine and rebuild a more impactful professional development program.

How to Plan Great PD

Going virtual has given us more tools, broadened our perspective and greatly increased our learning networks. BUT, not recognizing this shift as part of a larger organizational change, only seeing it as an emergency response, puts at risk losing everything we gained. Now is the time to institutionalize these gains by see this shift as an exercise in Change Management.

However, the emergence of virtual PD has allowed for more, smaller bets to be placed. To institutionalise improvements in teaching and learning, what do you need to know to be able to deliver great Professional Development (PD)?

PD Coordinators Job-Alike

This job-alike will focus on how we evaluate if those needs are being met by allowing participants to explore with peers different areas of evaluation. Discussion topics will be influenced by research on how to effectively provision and evaluate professional development.

    Curriculum Coordinator and IB Educator, HD Beijing

    Renee is an international educator and school leader in the Asia Pacific region. Trained as a classroom teacher, she specializes in curriculum development, inclusive practices in teaching and learning, and professional development and evaluation. She also works with the IB community, leading workshops and supporting the school authorization process.

  • Michael Iannini

    Affiliated Council of International Schools Consultant

    Michael’s main focus is helping schools help master the arts of collaboration, consensus building, and successful organizational management. His diverse work experience has given him the ability to successfully engage with improve school capacity to realize the full potential of their greatest asset, their staff.

    Curriculum Manager, Oak National Academy
