6 Leadership Articles To Prepare You For The Fall

The next school year won’t be a return to normal. We will need more compassionate and resilient middle leaders in the Fall. Why? Many international educators are being told to not travel this Summer, to not return home. The grief and anxiety of not being able to see and travel with our loved ones will cast a dark cloud over the return to school in August. Although we may get a break from work, we won’t get a break from life.

This month I have selected several articles on leadership that I believe will broaden the perspectives on the special role that middle leaders will need to play to ensure the inevitable anxiety and grief of teachers won’t impact student learning in 2021-22.

I highly recommend you read this article about how to create a Success Profile for middle leaders, and then watch my interview with Jennifer Abrams about how this Summer can be spent broadening our abilities to work more effectively and humanely together.

Have a great week,

Michael

Leadership Articles To Broaden Perspective

The Feeling Economy and Customer Empathy – This article will hopefully provoke some thinking outside of the ‘educational leader box’. AI is only beginning to impact education; the real lesson in this article is about the attributes of future leaders and how as educators we should be demonstrating those attributes, not only for our students, but our colleagues.

Anger, Masked with a Smile: How to Handle Passive-Aggressive Workers – The dark cloud I forecast for August will most likely come in the form of passive-aggressive behaviour. This article is short and rich with advice that you can begin using now.

When Rudeness Becomes A Matter Of Life Or Death – “Have you been interrupted by a colleague in a meeting, and found yourself replaying the event in your head even after you’ve left work for the day? Minor rude events like this happen all the time, and you may be surprised by the magnitude of the effects they have on our decision-making and functioning.”

Giving Voice To Values: A Glimpse Of The Origin Story – “How can you effectively stand up for your values under pressure?” This article provides practical guidance about how we can give voice to our values, in a constructive way that will promote personal growth.

Wisdom Isn’t What You Think It Is – This Fall I highly encourage you to move away from thinking about the role of the middle leader as a subject or technical expert. Teachers won’t want a supervisor or line manager in the Fall, they are going to want a mentor.

Simple Leadership Isn't Simple – KISS your colleagues in the Fall. Keep it Short and Simple. Great advice here on how to simplify the parameters that guide us, leaders.
