Many teachers will be entering this school year with a cloud over them; a heavy feeling of grief and anxiety. The best advice grief counsellors and mental health experts have for us is to acknowledge their loss. Let them know you will do your best to support them through this school year. Don't tell them it will be ok or that things will get better. It is critical to many educators that their colleagues and leadership recognize that they are not returning to school as a whole person.
Your first team meeting must acknowledge the hardships of last year, what many missed or had to endure this Summer because of continued pandemic travel restrictions, and most importantly, that this year will see a continuation of personal hardship and sacrifice. An example of the personal hardship some international educators faced this Summer is expressed in an article I wrote for ACAMIS on how to prepare for a 21-day hotel quarantine with a child. Even if people visited their home country, it was by no means a holiday.
